Once in a while, a medical breakthrough of epic proportions happens. That’s what has happened as doctors have begun to realise the potential and regenerative power of human blood and stem cells. An entirely new branch of medicine has opened up: regenerative medicine. PRP is defined as “the process of creating living, functional tissues to repair or replace tissue or organ function lost due to ageing, disease, damage or congenital abnormalities”.
That’s a very wide definition. So what exactly is PRP and how does PRP work? It’s little wonder that doctors from many branches of medicine are excited. The potential for new treatments and cures is immense. Anti-ageing medicine can now use special cells from your own blood to help your body repair itself. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) has been jokingly referred to as the ‘Vampire Facelift’, because it’s made from the patient’s own blood. In reality, this makes it a safe, highly effective regenerating treatment.
How Does PRP Work?
In preparation for treatment, your cosmetic doctor will remove a small amount of your own blood in order to prepare a concentration of the rich platelets that will stimulate your stem cells. These platelets help with functions such as blood clotting, but they are also capable of releasing growth factors that help your body’s cells regenerate its tissues. It’s the power of these growth factors that Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment harnesses in this anti-ageing treatment.
Your cosmetic doctor will determine whether you are a candidate for this Stem Cell regenerative medicine treatment. If you have certain skin diseases, the treatment might not be appropriate for you.
Prior to your treatment, your cosmetic nurse or doctor will extract approximately 10 – 20 mls of your blood, which will be placed in the centrifuge for between 5 and 8 minutes. The ‘rich platelets’ are extracted from the separated blood plasma, and are then injected in the deep dermis (the fat layer of the skin). Over the following weeks they will help to increase the amount of collagen (the substance that gives your skin its youthful fullness), and this helps to increase skin thickness as well as its general health.
Platelet Rich Plasma Results
Doctors in many countries have been reporting the results of this treatment for some time now. Patients can expect to see a reduction in wrinkling and a more youthful appearance of their skin. PRP results in most areas of the face, neck and jawline, as well as the back of your hands, your décollétage and other areas of the body can be treated with PRP.
