Liposuction / Liposculpture
Pre-Operation Consultation
- Prior to surgery a complete medical history is taken and a thorough examination is conducted in order to evaluate your general health.
- Dr Konrat describes the types of anesthesia to be used, the procedure, what results you can realistically expect and the possible risks and complications.
- Pre-operative directions will include the elimination of certain drugs containing aspirin in order to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding and bruising. Antibiotics may be prescribed prior to surgery to prevent infection.
- Photographs and measurements are taken before and after surgery in order to evaluate the final results.
The Operation
Liposculpture is performed as day surgery in the minor operations room at Brisbane Cosmetic Clinic under sedation with long-acting local anesthetic, (similar to "twilight" anesthetic).
- Dr Konrat begins by making a small incision in the skin. A dilute solution of local anesthetic and adrenaline is infiltrated with a fine cannula into the areas to be treated causing numbness and vasoconstriction.
- The excess fat in localized fat deposits is then suctioned via a cannula approximately 2.5 to 4.00 mm diameter. The fat is loosened from the surrounding tissue by moving the cannula back and forth, with the fat being removed or vacuumed from the body with a suction device. After the procedure, excess tumescent or local anesthetic fluid will drain from the small skin incisions and may be slightly blood stained.
Post-Operation
- After the procedure, absorbent dressings are placed over the skin incisions, and a compression garment is fitted. There are generally two or three tiny 'nicks' or incisions in the skin which will drain blood stained fluid for the first two or three days after the procedure. Massage and lymphatic drainage massage is advised right from the first day after your surgery for the next few weeks to assist with absorption and drainage of the excess fluid and contraction of the skin. In general the compression garment is worn "full-time" for 2 weeks, then part-time for a further 2 weeks, but instructions will vary depending on your individual circumstances. It is normal for blood stained fluid to drain from your little nicks and sometimes soak your dressing pads in the first 24 - 48 hours.
- Leaving the clinic: ?You will not be able to drive, and must arrange for transport to your home or accommodation. You should not take public transport. You should have a responsible adult to act as your carer on the first night, and to be present when you take your shower the next morning. When you first take your garment off the morning following the surgery, blood pressure drops and standing in a hot hour can cause fainting. A proper hot breakfast with at least 2 litres to drink is encouraged prior to your first post-operative shower. # You should be prepared for leakage. Cover the car seats with plastic or old towels. Likewise, we recommend you prepare your bed by covering the mattress with a waterproof cover and use old bed linen and towels on which to sleep.
- Returning to normal activity: ?Generally patients can return to normal activity within 3 - 7 days. This will depend on the extent of the procedure and your normal occupation.
- Follow-up arrangements:
- An appointment will be made to see Dr Konrat within a few days of the surgery and again at 3 weeks, 6 weeks and 6 months.
- It is important that you keep all post-operative appointments so that risks and complications can be avoided.
- These appointments ensure that you receive all appropriate treatment for optimal results of the surgery.
