Otoplasty is a simple procedure, which can correct torn earlobes or, more commonly, reposition protruding ears closer to the head. This surgery is very common amongst both men and women who have been uncomfortable with the shape and position of their ears for years. Many people find that they have always grown long hair, as a means of covering their ears and that protruding ears have been a source of embarrassment all their lives. This procedure is very straightforward and quick, and afterwards it's possible to wear you hair in any fashion of choice.

Although this procedure can be performed on children aged 5 and over Brisbane Cosmetic Clinic will not admit anyone under the age of 18.

The operation takes place through an incision made at the back of the ear, which exposes the cartilage to be operated on. It is then sculpted, removed or folded, depending upon what is needed, to make the ear look more aesthetically pleasing. Sutures are used to stitch the cartilage together. The procedure takes about less than two hours and is usually performed under local anesthetic with oral sedation to help you relax.

The patient wears a snug-fitting bandage for 48 hours, which is then removed and replaced with a headband to support the healing ears for at least one week during the day and six weeks whilst sleeping.

Post-operative discomfort is well treated with Nurofen or Panadol.

Risks & complications of Otoplasty
  • Complications are infrequent and usually minor.
  • Hematoma in the ear or in the incision wound requiring drainage.
  • Infection in the cartilage forming scar tissues rarely requiring another operation. Usually treated well with antibiotics.
  • Re-protrusion of one or both ears requiring a second surgery
  • Possibility of dissatisfaction with otoplasty results. The ears may not be symmetrical after cosmetic ear surgery, but unless the asymmetry is serious, it is rarely noticeable.
